Multiple DUI Checkpoints Set Up Over Holiday Weekend
Knowing that people were likely to start celebrating early, the Las Vegas Police Department set up multiple DUI checkpoints the Friday before the Fourth of July in an attempt to crack down on driving under the influence incidents.
According to reports, the Metro police set up one checkpoint at the intersection of Jones and Charleston Boulevards. This area has been a popular spot for nabbing drunk drivers in the past, making it ideal for this year's holiday festivities.
When vehicles pulled up to this and other checkpoints in the area, they were questioned by officers as to whether they had been using drugs and/or alcohol. If the officers had reason to believe that a driver was under the influence, the officer would ask the person to perform field sobriety tests, which could then lead to breath testing.
Drivers that did not pass the field sobriety tests were arrested and transported to the local detention center, in this case the Clark County Detention Center. Since the Fourth of July weekend is notorious for drinking and driving, the Metro police force hoped to cut down on dangerous drivers hitting the road by increasing their presence in the area.
