FBI Reports 2009 Crime Drop
For the third year in a row, violent crime rates across the nation are dropping. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), violent crime decreased by 5.3% from 2008. Some violent crimes decreased more than others. For example, there was a 7.3% decrease in murders, but there was only a 2.6% decrease in rape. Grand theft auto fell by an astonishing 17.1%, although burglary in general only fell by 1.3%.
Nonviolent property crime fell as well, overall by 4.6%. Officials are warning, though, that the continued recession may mean that these rates will increase in the next year or two. In addition to crime generally being up when jobless rates are up, the police department budget cuts will probably affect crimes rates as well.
