Two Men Arrested at Airport for Tranporting $1 Million in Heroin
Two men, 31 year old Jose Villarreal-Gazaviz and 47 year old Jessie Gallegos, both of whom are from Phoenix, were arrested on Sunday after they were caught at McCarran International Airport with more than 7 pounds of black tar heroin.
7 pounds of black tar heroin is worth over $1 million. One suspect was allegedly carrying a bag with 1.4 pounds of heroin, and the other was carrying a bag with 5.6 pounds of heroin. They were at the Las Vegas airport on their way to Indianapolis.
Police were alerted by airport security after they realized that the luggage was suspicious and possibly contained illegal drugs. A K-9 drug sniffing dog alerted police to the substances in the bag. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Metro police are both working on the case. It is reported that neither man is being cooperative.
Both suspects are being charged with federal and felony offenses of distribution of heroin and conspiracy to distribute heroin. Under federal law, heroin is a schedule I drug, meaning it has very strict penalties for distribution.
