Sobriety Check Points Less Effective Than Roving Patrols

Both critics and supporters of DUI check points agree: they are less effective at catching dangerous drivers than roving patrols. Critics, however, believe that this information is a reason to stop sobriety check points, whereas its supports believe that while it catches fewer drunk drivers, it prohibits a lot more.

This holiday weekend, Las Vegas metro set up five check points and arrested 58 people for DUI.

The press surrounding check points is supposed to discourage people from driving under the influence at all, but many argue that with social networking tools like twitter and texting, all the check points do is encourage people to take different routes.

Some critics argue that the check points are just a "public-relations campaign" that make people believe that the police are decreasing drunk driving and drunk driving related accidents, when in fact all they are doing is appeasing anti-DUI groups like MADD.

Many people wonder if the costs of the check points are worth the benefits. With only a very small percentage of people being caught drunk driving, and inconveniencing thousands, the high costs of check points seem like an inefficient use of resources.
