LA's 'Grim Sleeper' Suspect Apprehended

From 1985 to 1988, eight people were murdered in South Los Angeles. One woman survived an attack and was able to give a description of the murderer to police. 13 years passed with no further crimes or evidence. Then, in 2002, 15-year old Princess Berthomieux was found dead. During the next 5 years, two more women were killed and DNA evidence linked all 10 of the murders. The gap in the killings is what earned him the nickname "the Grim Sleeper."
Yesterday, LAPD arrested 57-year old Lonnie David Franklin, Jr. They followed a DNA trail from a relative, Franklin's son, who had been investigated for a different crime. His son was too young to have been the Grim Sleeper.
Police made sure that all evidence was collected legally and began a 24 hour watch of Franklin. They were eventually able to obtain DNA from a meal. When the report came back that Franklin's DNA matched DNA from the murders, police arrested Franklin on 10 counts of murder, and 1 count of attempted murder. He is also being investigated in connection with the murder of a man, though no charges have been brought.
