Secretary of State candidate Rob Lauer has been charged with misdemeanor battery for putting a supporter, Jennifer Von Tobel, in a reverse wrist lock.
Von Tobel is 46 and has multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease which affects nerves in the spinal cord and brain. Many people with MS have difficulty moving and walking. According to police reports, Von Tobel was joking with Lauer when he insisted that he demonstrate a self defense move on her. She initially refused, but eventually put up a hand, which Lauer then twisted behind her back. Her wrist was sprained and her shoulder was inflamed from the incident.
Although a surveillance camera confirms Von Tobel's account, Lauer has countered the story, saying that she had previously put him in a head lock and joked that he could not beat her up because she was from New York. He also claims that she was drunk and asked him to demonstrate the reverse wrist lock. There are not witnesses or video footage to confirm his side of the story.
Lauer is running against Democratic incumbent Secretary of State Ross Miller.
